Day 56

Day 56 of Lochlan’s healing journey with leukaemia sure took us on an unexpected ride. We met with the doctors this morning who informed us that the first of Lochlan’s blood cultures from yesterday came back positive for a bacterial infection (staph). With his port and a few stitches from a skin graft there are a few possible entry points for the staph to get in and do its damage. Unfortunately the antibiotics they had been giving weren’t working so they started him on a second kind too. Both are blanket antibiotics that cover a variety of things but once the cultures come back more developed they’ll know exactly which antibiotic will work best and give him that. Unfortunately because of this they told us we’d be staying in hospital for 7-10 days.

After a little while we got news that Lochlan’s oncology team at the children’s hospital 3 hours away wanted to see him and care for him in person rather than relaying through the paediatrician at our home hospital. So they arranged for an ambulance to take us away.

Once we arrived at the children’s hospital, it was interesting to find out that we were booked into the exact same room as we were when we stayed here back in July and August. So it weirdly felt like coming home.

The doctor and nurses here seemed surprised at how good Lochlan feels. I think when they heard he had Covid and a staph infection on top of his leukaemia they thought his vitals would be worse than they were. Thankfully everything has been great there, and other than a cough, and feeling disappointed and sad for all of this Lochlan is feeling pretty good. He’s happy he is mobile, but unfortunately due to being in isolation he can’t go anywhere (no garden visits this time). Thankfully the room here is about 4 times the size of the one at the home hospital so he can wander around inside here so he doesn’t lose strength that he’s worked so hard to build back up.

As for me… well, I’m so sad about all of this. I just want my boy home and healthy. I want to be with my husband. I want to be able to hug my 12 year old. I want to be able to walk my land barefoot, and search my jungle of a garden for fresh veggies. We’ll get there again. One step at a time.
